Should I go 1440p or 4K for RTX 4070 on a 27-inch monitor?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I’m worried my RTX 4070 won’t be enough to drive the higher resolution smoothly in newer games. I see benchmarks showing playable frame rates at 4K with settings adjustments, yet my gut says the pixel count might be overkill for my 27-inch desk space.

I actually wrestled with this last year. I ended up with a 27 inch panel and an RTX 4070, and in the latest games I found 4K looked amazing but taxed the frame rate unless I dropped settings or used DLSS. With DLSS Quality I hovered in the 60s for story games and higher for some faster titles, but not consistently smooth at max. At 1440p I could stay around 100+ in most things and felt the UI and menus were clearer without pushing the GPU as hard. The desk space and eye strain were nice at 27 inches, and the jump to 4K felt like a bit wasted for me.

I get the gut feeling about desk space. At 27 inches that pixel density is real but not night and day unless you sit very close. The sharpness can be impressive in menus and text, but in games you might chase steady frames more than perfect pixels.

Would you be able to try a borrowed panel for a weekend to see if the extra crispness actually changes how you feel about the games you play?

Another angle is to think about refresh rate and latency more than resolution. If you care about smooth motion, a strong 1440p setup with a fast panel can feel much closer to the real experience you want than chasing higher pixels, and you can still use upscaling tricks to get nicer visuals when you want.
