Should I go 1440p or 4K monitor with my RTX 3070 for gaming?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I’m worried my graphics card won’t handle the higher resolution well in newer games. My 3070 runs everything fine on my current 1080p screen, but I’m not sure if the visual jump is worth the potential hit to my frame rates.

I swapped from 1080p to a higher-res panel on a 3070 last year. The image was noticeably crisper, but in newer games I’d dip into the 40s unless I dropped settings or turned on DLSS. It felt like a compromise more than a clear win.

I've gone 4K on a newer rig, and the picture is unreal, but the ride is bumpy on a 3070 when the action gets heavy. You either push the detail sliders, use DLSS, or accept lower frame rates. It’s pretty obvious the jump costs power.

For my setup, the higher-res option hit a sweet spot. You get a sharper image than 1080p and much higher frame rates than 4K, so in most current titles you’ll stay in a comfortable range if you’re aiming for around 60–120 Hz. It’s not perfect, but it’s predictable.

I wonder if the question isn’t just about resolution. Maybe the bigger bottleneck is smoothness, refresh rate, or even the kind of games you play. Do you think the real problem is the GPU or something else?
