Should I go for a trabeculectomy for glaucoma if meds fail and recovery concerns?
#1
I’ve been told I need a trabeculectomy for my glaucoma, and I’m really nervous about the recovery. My pressure just isn’t controlled with drops anymore, but the idea of a permanent drainage bleb and the post-op routine has me worried it might be more than I can handle.

I had a trabeculectomy, and I was scared about the recovery too. The idea of a permanent bleb is jarring. The first week was a blur of drops and eye protection, but by the second month it felt more normal and the pressure steadied.

The post op routine did feel heavy at first—lots of checkups, planning around activities, and keeping the eye protected. It was a slog, but the small wins piled up: pressure readings steadier, less eye strain, and I could sleep more restfully after a while.

I keep wondering if the real problem is the fear more than the surgery itself. Maybe the fear is louder than the facts. Do you have a chance to talk with a few patients who had it?

Another friend swore it saved their independence; another said it was the hardest thing they ever did. It’s not a clean story, and I’m not sure what would be best for you.
