Should i go with a mesh wifi system or a single powerful router?

I'm trying to set up a new home office and I've hit a wall with my network. My current router just can't handle the video calls, large file transfers, and my partner streaming all at once without stuttering. I keep seeing recommendations for a mesh system to eliminate dead zones, but I'm worried about the complexity of setting it up myself versus just getting a single powerful router.

We had a similar wall here. The router would choke when two people were on video calls and someone started a big file download at the same time. A mesh system filled the gaps, but the setup felt fussy, and we still had jitter in the office PC sometimes.

What helped most for us was a single, powerful router plus a wired backhaul to a small switch in the home office. Pushing the ISP plan through that helped reduce stuttering on video calls and big transfers. It was simpler to manage, but I did have to fish an ethernet run through the attic, which was a pain.

Do you actually need wifi everywhere or is most of your traffic near the main desk? If most devices are clustered, a single strong router with a couple of wired APs might be enough.

I did try a mesh too and it sounded great on paper. The setup took longer than expected, the app kept nagging about cloud sign-ins, and in the end I didn't feel the reliability beat the wired-backed approach. Maybe I just didn't optimize it, though, who knows.
