Should I hire a tax pro or use software for freelance tax reporting?

I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle the tax reporting for my freelance side income this year. I’ve been using a basic spreadsheet, but I’m worried I’m missing deductible expenses or not categorizing things correctly, and I don’t know if I should just use software or hire someone.

Yeah I started with a spreadsheet too. I kept receipts in a folder and tried to categorize stuff, but I kept missing the mileage and the home office portion. The big wake up was realizing some line items qualify as deductions I never flagged before, like software subscriptions tied to the work and internet. It felt like a moving target, and I hadn't separated personal from business expenses cleanly.

I switched to software a few months in. QuickBooks Self-Employed or Wave made it auto categorize stuff, track mileage, and pull receipts from my email. It saved me a ton of hours, but I still found myself double checking categories and wondering if I tagged everything right.

Do you think the real bottleneck isn’t missing items but getting the quarterly taxes estimated right and paid on time?

I once hired a CPA to tidy things up and I ended up pausing the experiment after the first bill, because the numbers felt right enough and I wasn't sure I was getting extra value. Still, the idea of a second pair of eyes is appealing, especially come tax season.
