Should i install a dedicated ev charger or use a 240v outlet at my apartment?

I just got my first EV and I’m trying to figure out the best way to charge it at my apartment. My landlord is willing to let me install something, but I’m stuck deciding between a standard 240V outlet or a dedicated wall unit.

Go with the dedicated wall unit if you can swing the upfront cost. A dedicated circuit keeps the charger out of the rest of the apartment wiring, charges more reliably, and you can add features later like scheduling or load management.

I started with a 240V outlet and it was fine for daily top ups, but I worried about what else was on the same circuit—dryer, space heater, whatever. It felt okay until it wasn’t.

Is the real bottleneck the charging speed or the building’s electrical capacity? I keep bouncing between a slow outlet and a future proof wall unit.

We did a short test first—temporary outlet, watched the meter. Over a few weeks the night rate barely moved the bill and the car still topped up, which made me pause before committing to a full install.
