Should I install a wall unit or use a 240 volt outlet for apartment ev charging?

I just got my first EV and I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle charging at my apartment. My landlord is willing to let me install something, but I’m stuck deciding between a basic 240V outlet or a dedicated wall unit. The cost difference is significant, and I’m not sure if the faster charging speed is worth it for my daily commute.

Had a 240V outlet installed in my first apartment. It was cheaper up front, and I used a basic Level 2 charger that plugged right in. It topped up at a decent pace, not lightning fast, but enough for my daily routine. The install was simple, the landlord handled the permit, and I paid for the outlet itself. I didn’t see a huge win from upgrading to a wall unit because my commute is short and I mostly charged overnight.

I went with a dedicated wall unit after a few months. It was pricier to install, but the charge came faster—more time to run errands in the evening rather than wait. If your daily miles are modest, you might not notice a big difference, especially if you’re already charging at off-peak hours. Still, having a more polished setup felt nicer and less fiddly.

This feels like something your landlord has to decide, not just you. A dedicated circuit could be more robust, but it might require a panel upgrade or different meters. If the building is older, a wall unit might not be worth it yet. The 240V outlet option keeps costs down but offers less long term flexibility.

I keep wondering if we’re solving the real problem. Maybe the challenge isn’t the speed but parking location, access to a charger, or time at home. I thought faster would help, but I ended up scheduling charging around when I could plug in. Would a short trial help you decide?
