Should I invest in a follow focus for smoother pull focus?

I’ve been trying to get a clean, professional-looking pull focus in my short films, but my manual focus ring just feels too jerky and imprecise. I’m wondering if a follow focus system would actually give me the smooth, repeatable motion I’m after, or if I just need more practice with what I have.

Yeah, a proper follow focus can really change the game. The repeatable motion and clean hits on marks are noticeable, especially on longer takes where the focus point slowly shifts. It won’t fix bad glass or bad lighting, and you still need solid marks, but it makes rack pulls feel intentional rather than a guess.

I spent a long time with just the manual ring and I kept chasing jerkiness. Slowing way down, counting tiny increments, and marking distances helped a bit, but it still felt off when the camera moved or when I was on a wide aperture. More practice didn't erase it entirely.

I bought a cheap rig with a basic wheel and it didn’t feel smoother at all. The throw was clunky, the clamp slipped, and I ended up reverting to my old setup because I didn’t see any real payoff.

Maybe the problem isn’t the ring at all. I started wondering if the real drag is depth of field and lighting driving the decision to pull focus differently. I tried letting the shot breathe with a slower focus pull and a different lens, and it changed how I read the scene. What camera and lens are you using?
