Should i keep my domain and hosting with the same company or separate them?

I’m trying to figure out if I should keep my domain registration and web hosting with the same company for simplicity, or if I should separate them for better control. I’ve heard that splitting them can make transferring hosts less of a headache later, but I’m worried about managing two separate accounts and potential DNS complications.

I kept domain and hosting in the same account for years because it felt smoother. One login, one renewal date, and I could point the domain to the host with a couple clicks. The downside is if the host goes sideways, the domain can feel stuck in that ecosystem. Still, for a simple site, it worked and I didn’t lose sleep over it.

Splitting them seemed smart until I ran into DNS quirks that suddenly mattered. When we moved hosting to a different company, updating the A record and nameservers caused a ripple effect, and propagation drifted for a day or two. We learned to watch TTLs and keep one person responsible for DNS changes to avoid chaos.

I keep wondering if the real problem is control or just fear of vendor lock in. Do you actually need to own the DNS and domain separately, or is it mainly convenience you’re chasing?

Honestly I once got buried under renewal emails when I had two accounts, and I stared at the clock waiting for a banner that never came. I eventually kept some notes in a notebook and labeled where things live. Anyway, the core idea still sticks: keeping them together is easy, splitting is a risk plan you make in case one vendor goes away, but it does add a layer of management.
