Should I pack a carry-on for a Scottish Highlands trip?
#1
I’m planning a two-week trip through the Scottish Highlands and I’m really torn on how to handle luggage. I’ll be moving to a new B&B or small inn almost every other night, and the idea of dragging a large rolling suitcase over cobblestones and into tiny historic places sounds like a nightmare. But I also need to pack for unpredictable weather and some nicer dinners. Has anyone managed a similar trip with just a carry-on?

I did a two week trip in the highlands with a small bag. I used a light rolling bag and a day pack. The hosts stored it between stays so I could travel light. Laundry was useful and I washed shirts by hand when needed. Layers and a waterproof shell covered most weather surprises and I wore sturdy walking boots.

That plan with a big suitcase felt like a drag in every town. I started with a large suitcase and it slowed me down on cobblestones and staircases. I eventually shipped a bag home and kept a compact bag for the rest of the trip. It saved me from hauling gear but I missed one or two dinner outfits.

Is the real problem the luggage or the pace and the fear of missing things? I ask because I tried light packing on a shorter trip and still felt rushed. It might be the route that makes any bag feel wrong more than the bag itself.

One thing I learned is that you can improvise. I kept a super small bag and used laundries in town when possible. There were nights I forgot something and bought socks or a shirt while I was there. It was imperfect but it worked enough to keep moving.
