Should i pick a Thunderbolt dock or USB-C hub for a two-monitor setup?

I’m trying to decide between a Thunderbolt dock and a standard USB-C hub for my home office setup, and I’m honestly a bit lost on what the real-world difference would be for me. I have two 1080p monitors, an external SSD, and I occasionally need to plug in an ethernet cable, but I don’t do video editing or anything that intense.

I run two monitors and an external SSD off a USB C hub and it mostly works. But when I copy big files or plug in several devices at once the second monitor can slow and the drive feels busy.

If you can swing it a Thunderbolt dock would give more headroom for the two displays, the SSD and an ethernet connection but it costs more and you might not need it yet.

Chances are the USB C hub is enough given your setup of two 1080p monitors and an external drive. Still if you want to future proof a bit you can go with a higher end dock.

Could the real issue be something else like desk space or cable mess rather than the dock choice?
