Should I pursue a multi-engine rating or strengthen my single-engine IFR skills?

I’m trying to decide if I should pursue a multi-engine rating next, but I’m worried my single-engine IFR skills aren’t quite solid enough yet. The jump in systems complexity and the single-engine emergency procedure feels like a big step.

I felt the same tug last year. My single engine IFR was okay but the extra systems and the single engine emergency routine felt big. I booked two short duals and worked through abnormal procedures and engine failure drills in the sim.

I tried to keep it simple I did a few trips with a mentor and kept a tight checklist for the step by step parts. It helped to break the training into small chunks and not swallow the whole package at once.

Would it help to delay the multi engine rating and shore up the basics with more single engine IFR practice before considering it?

One day the plan felt fine until a gusty approach and a stubborn avionics issue reminded me that nerves show up in the wrong way. I scribbled notes and took a step back, but that memory makes me hesitate about rushing into the next phase.
