Should i replace my timing belt now or wait until it hits 100,000 miles?

I’m trying to decide if I should get my car’s timing belt replaced now or push it a bit longer. The manual says 100,000 miles, but I’m only at 92,000 and the last inspection didn’t show any obvious wear. I’m just nervous because I’ve heard so many stories about catastrophic engine failure if it snaps.

I kept putting it off at first too thinking 92k was still early. When I finally asked a shop they said the belt itself often looks fine but the tensioner and pump wear out and you can’t know for sure until you pull it apart. I did it around 97k and added the water pump. It ran smooth after and I felt calmer.

Belts are not a ticking time bomb in every case but I did hear too many stories. I also heard people push to higher miles and then get stranded. Do what your gut says, but the risk is real enough to be honest.

On my first look I thought a quick visual would tell me everything. But a shop told me they check tensioner bearings and the pump while they’re in there, and those wear can sneak up fast. I decided to do the full kit near the limit and it cured the weird idle I had.

Have you priced a full timing belt kit with pump and maybe a belt tensioner yet? If the quote is reasonable, it might spare you a roadside scare.
