Should i start a statin at age 42 for high ldl?

My doctor mentioned starting me on a statin at my last check-up because my LDL cholesterol came back high, but I'm only 42 and otherwise feel healthy. I'm just not sure if taking a daily medication for what feels like a silent issue is the right step for me right now.

Honestly, I was in the same spot a couple years ago at 41. My doctor suggested a statin because my LDL was high even though I felt fine. I tried dialing back carbs and doing 30 minutes of cardio most days for about eight weeks. LDL barely budged, so we talked about meds. I ended up starting a low‑dose medication, which felt strange at first because I felt healthy.

Sometimes I wonder if the marker is telling the full story. If you’re otherwise healthy at 42, is the risk real enough to act now, or is this something you monitor for a while? I keep thinking about whether lifestyle changes actually move outcomes.

I pushed back once, asked for a 3 month follow‑up lipid panel and a clear plan. It felt odd to wait, but gave me time to try diet changes and track what happened. The next result was mixed, and I still haven't decided what to do.

For what it’s worth I keep looping back to the bigger picture. I drifted into thinking about sleep, stress and everyday habits, because those feel controllable. Then I snap back to the number and wonder what it actually means for long‑term health, and what the doctor would do with that info.
