Should i start iron supplement for low ferritin with normal hemoglobin?
#1
I just got my blood work back and my doctor said my ferritin level is 15 ng/mL. She called it iron deficiency without anemia and wants me to start a supplement, but I feel mostly fine, just a bit more tired than usual. I’m confused because my hemoglobin was in the normal range, so I don’t really understand how this works.

I had a similar thing, a ferritin reading around 15 and normal hemoglobin. The doc called it iron deficiency without anemia and suggested a supplement. I felt fine most days, just a little more tired, so I tried the pills. After about a month the fatigue eased a bit, but it was subtle and not a dramatic change.

I tried ferrous sulfate at first and it wrecked my stomach for a few days. Then I switched to a gentler iron supplement and things settled. I did notice my stools getting darker, not alarming, and my energy ticked up slowly over a few weeks.

It makes you wonder if the number is the real problem. Could something else be causing the tiredness, like sleep, stress, or thyroid? I asked my doctor and they kept focusing on the iron, but I'm not sure.

I started taking the iron with a small smoothie of citrus to help absorption, and tried to take it with meals to cut down on stomach upset. After a while I didn’t notice a big difference in energy, but the gut stuff got better.

I kept forgetting to take it daily for a couple of weeks. When I finally checked in with the clinic, I hadn’t seen any big change and I just kept going on with life, tired days and busy days anyway.

While all this was happening I started tracking my sleep a bit more and wondered if maybe sleep quality mattered more than the iron stuff. Still, the iron thing stuck in my head and I kept worrying about labs, even though nothing dramatic happened.
