Should I start statins at 38 or try diet first to lower LDL?
#1
My doctor mentioned starting me on a statin at my last checkup because my LDL cholesterol came back high, but I’m only 38 and otherwise healthy. I’m just not sure if taking a daily medication this early is the right move for me, or if I should try to manage this strictly through diet and exercise for another six months first.

I get the mix of feelings. I’m 38 too and at first I wanted to try staying with lifestyle changes only. I doubled down on fiber, cut saturated fats, and started walking 30 minutes most days. A few months in I didn’t see the LDL drop much, which was frustrating, and I wondered if waiting was just wasting time.

In my case the conversation shifted after a few months: my doctor brought up a statin because the LDL kept staying high despite the changes. Part of me felt relief to have a plan, part of me worried about taking a daily med so young. I haven’t fully decided yet and keep weighing the trade-offs.

Do you know your 10 year risk yet?

Sometimes I worry the clinic numbers don’t match how I feel after a long day, like I crushed a workout and still got a high number on the chart. It’s easy to get tunnel vision about the next appointment, but I try to remember there’s a bigger picture here, even if I’m not sure what it is yet.
