Should I switch from default to a custom controller layout in a racing game?

I just got the new racing game and I'm struggling to decide if I should stick with the default controller layout or finally try a custom one. My lap times are so inconsistent, and I can't tell if it's my driving line or the fact I keep hitting the wrong buttons in a tight corner.

I finally tried a custom layout after a few days and it did help me stop hitting the wrong button in tight corners. Took a couple sessions to adjust the feel, but with a few runs I started noticing the difference.

Default controls still feel familiar, but I kept brushing the wrong button on the exit of a corner and my lap times stayed all over the place.

I did some quick side-by-side tests, one lap with default mapping and one lap with my map, timing was noisy but I think the more consistent line came from focusing on braking points rather than chasing button presses.
