Should I switch to an electric lawn mower for less noise and fumes?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if it’s even worth it to keep my old gas mower running this season, or if I should finally make the switch to electric. The noise and fumes are really starting to bother me, but I keep wondering if the manufacturing footprint of a new mower cancels out the local air quality benefit.

I swapped to a cordless electric last spring. The noise cut in half and the fumes are gone, which was amazing on weekend mornings. It did run out of juice about halfway through a decent-sized yard, so I kept a spare battery in the shed. Edges and rough spots were fine, but it felt a little slower up hills and I missed the steady torque of a gas engine on thick weeds. Still, I’m glad I tried it.

I did a rough back of envelope calc comparing yearly gas use to buying a new electric unit. The upfront footprint of batteries isn’t tiny, and local air quality matters, but I keep wondering if the bigger win is simply not running the mower as aggressively. The shed is full of tangled chargers while I deliberate.

Do I really know what problem I’m solving—the noise, the fumes, or something else?

I tried keeping the old setup alive with tuneups, new spark plug, fresh air filter, sharper blade, and a lighter mowing schedule. It cut better for a few weeks, then performance drifted in the heat. I didn’t track numbers, just felt it was still loud and drank gas, so I paused.
