Should I switch to wool dryer balls to replace fabric softener?
#1
I’m trying to switch to a more sustainable laundry routine, but I’m stuck on fabric softener. I’ve heard wool dryer balls can help, but I’m not sure if they actually work well enough to soften clothes and reduce static without any chemicals. Has anyone made this swap and noticed a real difference?

I switched to wool dryer balls last year and kept the same loads. They cut down on the noise and helped with static a little, but softness didn't change much.

For a couple of months I used them on towels, tees, and jeans. Towels came out fluffier, but the heavier fabrics felt the same as before.

I didn’t notice a real difference after about three months, and I still ended up using a tiny splash of fabric softener on socks in winter.

A friend swears by them, says the load feels lighter and the static is almost gone for her. Different clothes, different results I guess.

I keep wondering if my problem is actually humidity or the dryer vent, not the balls themselves. Am I chasing a symptom?

I tried cutting the load time and lowering heat a bit, and the balls still bounced around, but the clothes dried a touch evenly.

If you’re on the fence, maybe test with one weekly load and jot down roughness or static in a quick note.
