Should I trust Carfax or a pre-purchase inspection for a used compact SUV?

I’ve been looking at used compact SUVs and keep seeing ads mentioning a “clean Carfax report” as a major selling point. I’m just not sure how much weight to give that versus a thorough pre-purchase inspection from my own mechanic.
