Should I turn off active noise cancellation on my earbuds when I'm outside?

I just got the new wireless earbuds with the latest active noise cancellation, and I’m a bit torn. The sound isolation is incredible on my commute, but it makes me feel strangely disconnected when I’m just walking around the neighborhood and want to be aware of my surroundings. I’m wondering if others toggle the feature on and off frequently, or if you just get used to that sealed-off feeling.

I toggle mine a lot. On the bus I leave it on, but when I’m walking the neighborhood I switch ANC off so I can hear cars, bikes, and the dog across the street.

I tried getting used to the sealed vibe for a few days, but I kept stepping aside to listen and it just felt wrong. I ended up leaving it off most of the day.

I wish there was a quick gesture that felt natural—like a tap or a squeeze—to flip it, because reaching for the phone to adjust it breaks my pace.

Sometimes the fit matters more than the feature. If the seal is tight, the isolation hits hard and I bail to keep aware.

When the city is loud I use it, but when it’s calm I just let the street noise in. It keeps me grounded.

There was a moment I crossed a street and almost didn’t hear a horn. It scared me, and I’m not sure turning ANC on is really the answer.

Do you think the real issue is the earbuds or the idea of always chasing total quiet?
