Should I upgrade my F-350 rear axle for a camper to improve towing stability?

I’m trying to decide if I should upgrade the rear axle on my F-350 for a slide-in camper, but I’m worried about how it will affect my towing stability. The added weight of the camper plus my fifth-wheel trailer puts me right on the edge of the GAWR, and I’ve heard mixed things about whether a heavier axle actually helps or just causes other drivability issues.

I swapped in a heavier rear axle last year for a slide‑in, and it did not magically fix the wobble. It gave me a bit more payload room, but braking and steering felt the same until I adjusted the weight distribution hitch and tire pressures.

If you're right on the GAWR limit, a heavier axle isn't a cure for driveline dynamics. You still have to handle load transfer, hitch geometry, and tire contact patch; the upgrade mainly changes rating, not the sway physics.

Maybe the real issue is something else; I started doubting after chasing new parts. Sometimes wind and mirrors add twice the sway, and I wonder if the problem is the road, not the axle.

I did a quick field check with scales once and found the rear carried most of the camper load. I considered upgrading, but instead I tried airbags and an improved sway bar; felt a bit steadier on the highway but not a miracle.
