Should I upgrade my street bike suspension or keep the stock setup?

I’m trying to decide if I should upgrade the suspension on my old street bike or just leave it alone. The front end feels vague and wallowy when I hit a series of bumps mid-corner, which makes me nervous. I’m not sure if throwing money at new cartridges and a shock will really transform the feel, or if the bike’s basic character is just set.

I did a fork cartridge and a modern shock on an old street bike last year. It tightened the front a lot—less dive and the steering felt more controlled on broken pavement. But in mid‑corner bumps, it still felt vague and there was a wallow if the sequence was quick. It helped, but it didn’t transform the character.

I keep thinking maybe tires or air pressure are the real limit. I checked both and set fresh tires at a reasonable pressure, and that little change made the bite feel more confident. After that I still noticed the front wandering in choppy corners, so I’m not sure the suspension alone fixes it.

Do you think the real issue is geometry or ride height rather than the cartridges? I tried tweaking sag and clamp spacing a bit, felt like it made a tiny difference, but I’m not sure I solved the wallow.

Once I rode a bike where the steering head bearings were loose and it made the front feel completely different. After tightening those it was suddenly more predictable, even with the old fork. So maybe the suspension is part of a bigger puzzle.
