Should I upgrade to a 4K monitor for gaming or stick with 1440p for higher fps?

I'm trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, and I'm stuck on the real-world difference in sharpness versus the performance hit. My GPU can handle 4K in most games, but I'm wondering if the jump in clarity is actually noticeable during fast-paced gameplay or if I'd just be better off with higher frames at 1440p.

I upgraded to a 4K monitor last year and the textures in menus and UI looked incredible, but in fast shooters the jump in clarity didn’t feel like a game changer once things started moving.
