Should I upgrade to a 4K monitor for gaming or stick with 1440p for higher fps?

I'm trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, and I'm stuck on the real-world difference in sharpness versus the performance hit. My GPU can handle 4K in most games, but I'm wondering if the jump in clarity is actually noticeable during fast-paced gameplay or if I'd just be better off with higher frames at 1440p.

I upgraded to a 4K monitor last year and the textures in menus and UI looked incredible, but in fast shooters the jump in clarity didn’t feel like a game changer once things started moving. If you can drive the frame rate higher, that smoothness tends to punch through the chaos more than extra pixels do.

On my setup I found dropping to a lower resolution to push higher refresh helped more with tracking enemies than the sheer pixel density did. The game still looked solid, and the visuals weren't bad enough to break immersion, but I did notice motion stayed cleaner when the fps stayed up.

I did a quick side by side when the GPU was staying busy, and the higher frame rate made targets snap a little faster; the crispness from the top-end resolution was there, but it didn't cancel out the need for steady frames.

Do you tend to sit close to the screen, or is it a big monitor in a living room? Because the value of the extra sharpness can depend a lot on viewing distance and screen size.
