Should I worry about my heart rate dropping to the 50s on beta blockers?
#1
I’ve been on a beta blocker for a few months now to manage my hypertension, and while my blood pressure is better, I’ve noticed my heart rate sometimes drops into the low 50s when I’m just sitting reading. My doctor said it’s expected, but it still feels strange to see it that low and I occasionally get a bit lightheaded. Has anyone else experienced this kind of adjustment?

I’ve been on beta blockers too, and yes, resting heart rate in the 50s does feel weird. I’ve noticed it mostly when I’m sitting still—reading or watching a movie—and then suddenly the heartbeat seems to slow and it gives me a little spacey feeling. It’s not dizzy every time, but a few lightheaded moments have shown up now and then. The doctor said it can happen as your body adjusts, but it never fully eases the weirdness.

I kept a tiny diary for a couple weeks: resting HR in the low 50s, BP stable, no chest pain. The lightheadedness didn’t happen every day, but enough that I started moving more slowly when getting up and I paid attention to hydration and caffeine timing. Nothing dramatic changed, but it felt less scary once I saw the pattern.

I tried not to overthink it, just logged it and kept going. Then a weekend when I forgot to drink water and stood up fast—yep, sudden lightheadedness. Since then I’m more mindful of slow transitions, though the HR still sits in that range.

Is it possible the real issue isn’t the rate but how you feel when it happens, or could something else be triggering the lightheadedness?
