Should we build a custom dashboard or buy an off-the-shelf warehouse solution?

I’m trying to decide if we should build a custom dashboard for our fulfillment center or just buy an off-the-shelf solution. Our main issue is that our current reports don’t give us real-time visibility into inventory accuracy or pick/pack cycle times, which makes it hard to spot bottlenecks before they delay shipments. I’m worried a custom build will be a maintenance headache, but the packaged software might not fit our specific warehouse layout and processes.

We tried an off the shelf dashboard for our fulfillment center and it looked slick, but the data felt stale by the time we could react. Inventory accuracy and pick/pack cycle times were always lagging reality, and maintenance turned into a sprint sink. We ended up layering on a lightweight custom pull. We wired in just the fields we actually needed from our WMS and scanning data, and that made a bigger difference than the vendor default.

After a vendor demo that promised perfect fit, we scrapped the idea of a one size fits all approach. It was painful at first, but we could finally map the dashboard to our dock layouts and tote codes. The hard part was keeping it in sync with process changes; every couple of months a change forced a hack. Now we tease out a small feature set and accept maintenance as a cost of tailoring.

We started with a minimal MVP that only surfaced live alerts on cycle time. It didn’t fix everything, but catching bottlenecks earlier was worth it, and it was cheap enough to iterate. Do you have internal capability to maintain a custom dashboard?

Sometimes I wonder if the real blocker is data quality or data integration more than the tool itself. We chased real time and ended up fixing feeds, not dashboards.
