Should we ditch the gas fireplace this winter for better indoor air quality?

I’m trying to figure out if my family should stop using our gas fireplace this winter. We love the coziness, but I keep reading that even occasional use has a real impact on indoor air quality and our household's overall emissions. I’m not sure if giving it up is a meaningful personal step or just a drop in the bucket.

I love the glow too. We use the gas fireplace a few evenings a week when it’s really cold. After a couple of nights I noticed the air felt dry and there was a faint whiff of combustion for a minute or two. Not dangerous, but not ideal either. We’ve learned to pull the blinds and crack a window for a quick refresh after using it, which kinda ruins the mood. Still, it’s hard to give up the coziness.

I tried a no-fire experiment last winter, turned it off and warmed with a thick blanket and the heat pump. It was fine, but the kids missed the ambiance, and I didn’t notice a big change in our energy bill. If anything, the room felt less alive.

I wonder if the bigger picture is our insulation and the way we heat the whole house. If the draftiness is the real problem, swapping the fireplace for better insulation might be worth more than giving up the glow. It’s frustrating to chase one feature and miss the bigger leak.

Have you actually measured anything like particulate levels or CO, or are you just going by how it feels?
