Should we hire third-party verification for our supplier claims?

I’m trying to decide if we should invest in a third-party verification service for our supplier claims, but I’m unsure if the cost is justified. We tell our customers we audit for ethical labor practices, but right now that’s just our own internal checklist. I’m worried that without that external validation, a savvy client might question our entire supply chain integrity.

We tried a third party verification for a subset of suppliers last year. It cost a few thousand dollars and took a couple of weeks to get a report. A few customers asked for it and seemed reassured; others barely noticed. It felt like an extra layer, not a guarantee.

In meetings, it sometimes feels like the external validation would become the baseline, but I still get tongue tied about how much it buys us. Some teams push back on the cost, others want it as a selling point, but the questions from clients still pop up about who audits, how often, and how you handle noncompliance.

If we do it, I’d test with one product line and one supplier tier first and track whether client inquiries drop or if the same concerns come up. Maybe use a simple dash of transparency rather than a full blown certificate.

Sometimes I think the real problem is how we present the claim rather than the verification itself. If we lead with the internal checklist we use, a savvy client might read through it and shrug. Perhaps the external validation only helps if the client can actually access a readable report.
