Should we rethink how threads are sorted to improve visibility?

I’ve noticed that some of the most interesting discussions on here seem to get buried after just a day or two, while simpler threads stick around on the front page for ages. I’m wondering if the way we currently sort threads by last reply might actually be hurting the visibility of more substantial conversations.

Yeah, I’ve seen it too. A nuanced, back-and-forth discussion can slip off the front page while a short, quick reply keeps the spot, even if it’s less valuable.

I tried a little experiment last week. A long thread with a lot of thoughtful comments faded from the top after a day, but a fresh two-liner stuck around longer. I felt the momentum shift without a clear winner.

Maybe the core issue isn’t only the last reply. People skim, click because of a punchy title, then stop. A deeper thread needs a stronger discovery path, not just a new update every few hours.

Do you think the real issue is how topics are surfaced, or is it something else entirely?
