What’s the best pick, 1440p or 4K monitor for RTX 4070 gaming?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I’m worried my RTX 4070 won’t handle the higher resolution well in newer games. I see benchmarks showing great 1440p performance, but I’m unsure if pushing for that extra pixel density is worth the potential hit to my frame rates.

I’ve got an RTX 4070 and a 1440p 27 inch monitor. It feels smooth in most newer titles at high to ultra with DLSS engaged, and I can keep a solid frame rate without turning everything down. The jump to 4K would mean either lower frame rates or cranking up DLSS, and I wasn’t convinced the extra pixel density was worth losing fluidity in fast games.

I keep circling back to the perception part. At normal desk distances the extra pixels can be subtle, and UI scaling can be a pain if you mix apps. If you sit close enough to notice detail maybe 4K helps, but for me the difference wasn’t dramatic. Does your setup sit close enough for it to matter?

I actually tested 4K briefly with DLSS quality and the image was crisper, but the hit to consistency was real. I went back to 1440p and didn’t look back.

I started at 1080p, moved to 1440p, then to 4K, and I still argue about it. The ceiling for games keeps moving and sometimes I wonder if the bigger issue is the game engine or the workload rather than the resolution alone.
