What’s the best value from Tokyo to Kyoto: Shinkansen vs overnight bus?
#1
I’m planning a trip to Japan and I’m trying to figure out the best way to get from Tokyo to Kyoto. The bullet train seems fast but expensive, while overnight buses are cheaper but take so long. I’m not sure which option gives the better value for the time and money.

Shinkansen is the fast way and it does feel worth it for the time you save. I rode Tokyo to Kyoto in about two and a half hours, comfy seats, quiet cabin. If you have a JR Pass you can ride the Hikari or Kodama and still keep it reasonable, otherwise the Nozomi price hits you hard for a same day. I liked the predictability and you can be in central Kyoto by lunch.

Overnight bus worked once when I was trying to save cash, it was cheap but the ride was long and I arrived groggy. You can set an alarm and sleep most of the way, but it messes with your first morning in Kyoto. Also luggage can be awkward and I missed a morning tour I had planned.

Splitting the trip can be a middle ground. If you’ll be hopping around Japan after Kyoto, the JR Pass makes more sense; if not, a pair of one way tickets on the Shinkansen might still be cheaper than you think with early booking and off peak times. The real trick is to compare prices for your exact dates and consider seat reservations.

Are you sure the puzzle is the transport choice, or is the bigger thing how much time you have in Kyoto? Maybe the problem isn’t the train vs bus but how you want to use those days.
