What’s the best way to charge my electric car with a 120v outlet overnight?

I’m trying to figure out if I can get by with just a standard 120V outlet for my new EV, since my daily commute is only about 20 miles. I’m worried it might not top up enough overnight, especially if it’s cold or I have to run errands after work.

I tried a standard 120V outlet for a few months. My commute is about 18 miles, and I usually woke up with a usable buffer thanks to an overnight top‑up. On mild days the car seemed to gain around 30–40 miles of range after 8 hours, which felt plenty. In winter it dropped to roughly 15–25 miles, and if I ran errands after work I sometimes still felt a bit short. It worked enough to avoid stopping at a public charger most days, but it depended on the weather.

Heating and battery warming eat into what you gain on 120V. If you park outside or in a cold garage, the overnight charge doesn’t stretch as far as the spec sheet; it sucks energy to stay warm. A Level 2 charger would give you a comfortable cushion even on a few extra trips after work. If you truly can’t install one, you’ll want to plan extra charge windows or keep trips economical.

I don’t know about your car, but for mine the range readout felt optimistic in winter and the actual miles you can get with a heater on are lower. I started budgeting for the worst‑case day and still managed to squeeze through, but there were days I wished for more juice. I considered charging at work or switching to a slower route to save energy, but I never quite got there.

Do you have a garage or a chance to install a 240V outlet?
