What’s the best way to find a reliable local handyman near me?

I’m trying to find a reliable local handyman for some small repairs around my house, but I’m not sure where to even start looking. Everyone I’ve asked just recommends big companies, but I’d really prefer to support a smaller independent person in our area.

Start with people you know. I asked a couple of neighbors and checked a local hardware store recommendations. One guy gave me two references and photos of recent small jobs, which helped me steer away from the big outfits.

I pulled a name from a flyer at the coffee shop, checked his reviews, and asked for a written estimate plus proof of insurance. He did the job, but the timeline slipped and the final bill included a couple extra fixes. Still, it felt more personal than the big companies.

Sometimes I wonder if the real bottleneck is not finding a good person but nailing down the exact job. One time I asked for a hinge repair and ended up with a minor wire reroute and extra parts. The rain didn't help either; coffee spilled, patience wore thin, and I ended up paying more than planned. Still, I learned to insist on a written scope before any extra work.

Do you already have a neighborhood group or someone you trust? There might be a quiet local who does good work that people there vouch for.
