What’s the best way to scrub old usernames from the web?

I’ve been trying to scrub my old usernames from the web and it feels impossible. Even after deleting old accounts, I keep finding traces of my old handle on random forums and archived sites. It makes me wonder how permanent a digital identity really is.

I did this for a couple of handles last year. Deleted accounts, changed usernames on new posts, but then I found old threads with my handle on a random gaming forum and a comment left years ago. archive.org still showed them. I filed data deletion requests where I could, but many sites didn't respond or took months. It felt like the footprint was bigger than I thought.

It also makes me question what permanent means online. Even if you scrub your profiles, someone else may have copied your posts, or a moderator might have quoted you. The identity kind of glues to content once it's out there.

Do you still care about the old handle, or is the bigger issue the presence of that past online self?

I started deleting pics and posts, but then I drifted into cleaning up my email subscriptions and organizing photos by year. It felt like taking back control of today, even if the internet still holds echoes.
