What’s the best way to style fast-growing hair without frequent trims?

I’ve been trying to figure out how to style my hair so it looks good without needing a haircut every few weeks. My hair grows out really fast and gets this awkward shape where it’s too bulky on the sides but still short on top, and I can’t seem to find a styling product that holds it neatly through that phase.

I tried keeping the sides a touch longer and the top a bit longer too, then used a matte paste. It looked decent for an hour, but as it grew the sides bulged and the top stayed stubbornly flat. I kept adjusting every few days and never found a sweet spot.

I actually switched to a lightweight flexible product and used a blow dryer with a cool setting to train the top to sit forward. It lasted a couple of hours on a work day, and by evening the shape was wrecked again.

Have you considered whether the real issue is the growth pattern rather than the cut? I asked my barber and he said it might be a thing with the way your hair grows and suggested waiting longer between cuts or trying a softer fade.

Drift: I once tried wearing a loose beanie to train it, but that felt silly. Later I realized I was chasing a shape that wasn’t natural for me, maybe letting it go a bit wild and using a light spray to tame the frizz was the only workable approach.
