What’s the best way to tell if a VHF antenna is causing poor radio range?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if my old VHF antenna is the reason my radio’s range has gotten so poor, or if the issue is with the radio itself or the cabling. I checked the connections at the back of the unit and they seem solid, but I don’t have a spare antenna to swap in for testing.

I had a similar check last year. The old antenna looked fine but the coax jacket had cracks near the connector. I swapped the feed line end-to-end and kept the same antenna. Range came back a bit, but not to what it was when new.

I borrowed a spare coax from a friend and rigged it up for a quick test. No magic cure, so I started wondering if the radio itself was dying or if the transmitter stage lost fidelity.

It crossed my mind to test with a different antenna, but I didn’t have one handy. I did measure the signal at the feed point and it looked weak on some channels even when the power meter read normal.

Could obscuring objects or power supply instability be the real culprit?
