What’s the fairest way to choose winners for a small art supply giveaway?

I’m trying to organize a small art supply giveaway for our local community group, but I’m stuck on how to fairly pick the winners. I don’t want it to feel random or like I’m playing favorites, but a full-blown contest with judging seems like too much work. How have you all handled picking winners for something like this?

One time we did a simple sign up in the lobby and asked people to write a note about how the prize would help their art We put every note in a clear box and drew winners in front of folks It felt fair and easy to explain

Maybe the real issue is not who wins but whether the process shows that the group cares and hears from folks who visit the meetings?

Another approach was to collect entries with name and a line about what they would make The organizers picked a few finalists by reading the notes and then did a quick draw for the final winners It was simple and transparent

During a past try I set up a little rubric to score entries on effort creativity relevance and community value It stalled fast as people argued about the scores and we stepped back from that idea
