What’s the path after an environmental chemistry master's: PhD or industry?
#1
I’m about to finish my master’s in environmental chemistry and I’m genuinely torn about whether to apply for PhD programs or start looking for industry jobs. The idea of committing to another 4-6 years of academic research feels daunting, especially when I see peers landing roles with good starting salaries. But I also worry that if I don’t go for the doctorate now, I might permanently close the door on certain research scientist positions that require that credential.

I went straight into industry after my master's. The starting salary looked good and the workload felt more predictable. Still, there are evenings I catch myself drafting grant ideas or wondering what I’d be doing if I stayed in the lab longer.

I kept a few doors open and talked to a couple of potential mentors while I hunted for jobs. The money factor varies a lot, and funding/fit can flip the decision. If you can land a funded path with a mentor you trust, it can be worth it, but it’s no guarantee you’ll love it.

Do you know what you want five years from now, or are you mostly reacting to what’s posting in your inbox?

One thing I did that helped was shadowing in a couple places—one lab and one industry R&D group—for a week each. It clarified what the daily grind feels like, which is easy to forget when you’re buried in classwork. It didn’t solve everything, but it shifted what I cared about.
