What’s the real-world performance of RTX 4070 on 1440p vs 4K?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I’m worried my RTX 4070 won’t be enough to drive the higher resolution smoothly in newer games. I’ve seen benchmarks, but I’m curious about real-world experience with this specific GPU when you push settings beyond medium.

I’ve been living with a 4070 on 1440p for a while. In new AAA titles I run high to ultra and flip on DLSS when RT is on. In practice I’ll see roughly 60–90fps in most titles with RT on DLSS Quality, and higher when RT is off. It feels smooth, and I haven’t felt stuck waiting for the card to catch up. 1440p gives me the clean balance between sharpness and frame rate.

4K with a 4070 is doable, but you’ll see more 40–70fps unless you lean on DLSS. In the few titles I tried with DLSS Performance or Balanced, visuals still looked good and frames climbed, but in some scenes I could tell the image wasn’t native. If you crave constant 4K60 with everything maxed, you’ll want DLSS on and some sacrifices elsewhere. Otherwise, 4K is more about the wow factor than raw speed in practice.

Do you actually need the extra pixels or is it the look and the brag of 4K you’re chasing?

Sometimes I wonder if the problem isn’t GPU power but the rest of the setup. I had a stutter in a couple of games that felt more like streaming textures than raw FPS, and I felt the VRAM creeping up near the limit. Not sure if that’s an edge case or something I’ll keep hitting every other title.
