What’s the simplest way to track turns during a family board game night?

I’m trying to figure out the best way to keep track of whose turn it is in our big family board game night. We keep losing the little cardboard turn markers, and someone always forgets when we just try to remember. What’s a simple, foolproof method you’ve used that doesn’t slow the game down?

we keep a small whiteboard on the coffee table and write the initials of the person who is up next. the name stays visible during their turn and we erase it after the move. a dry erase marker sits in a cup so we always have it handy

i tried using a stack of index cards with names and moved the top card each time. it worked for a while but someone forgot to move it and we sometimes fell out of sync

one friend uses a timer app that beeps when a turn ends and the player taps the phone to pass. it keeps pace but it can feel a bit clinical

do you really need a formal tag for the current player or is the rotation around the table enough
