What about Crohn's disease joint pain flares with gut symptoms?
#1
I’ve been managing my Crohn’s for years, but lately I’m noticing a lot more joint pain and stiffness that seems to flare right along with my gut symptoms. My rheumatologist mentioned this could be related to the inflammatory process itself, but it’s frustrating when treating the bowel disease doesn’t always ease the arthritis. Has anyone else found their joint issues follow a different pattern than their primary digestive flares?

Yep, I relate. For me the arthritis seems to have its own clock. With Crohn's I’ll have gut flares for weeks and my joints start whining a couple days into that, but sometimes the joints act up when the gut is quiet. I’ve learned to track both separately because treating the bowel doesn’t always quiet the joints. After moving to a systemic anti inflammatory biologic I did notice both improve, though not perfectly.

Mine usually shows up as morning stiffness and a slow aching vibe in the hips and knees even when the gut is calm. I tried adding gentle physical therapy and a low dose DMARD; felt better some weeks, other weeks not at all. It’s frustrating when gut meds don’t fix the joints.

Do you think the gut and joints are reacting to different triggers?

I started a simple symptom diary jotting gut feelings joint pain times sleep and stress. After a few weeks I saw some patterns like mornings better when I kept a steady bedtime. Still not sure if I’m chasing the right thing or if the system is just noisy.
