What are realistic chances of removing old usernames from the internet?

I’ve been trying to scrub my old usernames from the internet and it feels impossible. Even after deleting old accounts, I keep finding mentions of my old handles on forums and in comment sections I forgot existed. It makes me wonder how much of this old digital identity is truly permanent.

I started by deleting accounts and submitting data deletion requests where I could. I also ran a few quick searches for my old handles and asked admins to take down any quotes or posts they owned. It got quieter for a while, then a new old link popped up in a forum thread I barely remember. It felt like chasing a trail that never fully closes.

Old posts can live in archives, caches, and scraped copies long after you delete the page. Even if the live site is gone, someone somewhere saved a screenshot or copied the text. That stuff can come back in ways you don’t expect.

I keep wondering if I’m chasing the problem or just my own anxious imagination. Some days I think the real issue is how I present myself now, not erasing the past. The internet is full of echoes.

A few times I found my name in a forum thread years later, linked from a totally unrelated topic. It felt random and unfair. Maybe the goal is to reduce visibility, not erase it entirely. Do you think it’s even possible to truly scrub a digital handle once it’s left a footprint?
