What are realistic paths after a molecular biology degree beyond academia?

I’m about to start my PhD in molecular biology, but I’m already worried about the postdoc bottleneck everyone talks about. I’ve seen so many brilliant people in my lab struggle to find a permanent faculty position after years of moving between short-term fellowships, and it’s making me question the long-term viability of this traditional academic path.

I’m in the same boat in spirit. I’m about to start my PhD in molecular biology and the postdoc bottleneck is exactly what keeps me up some nights. I’ve watched bright people sprint between fellowships for years, and it never felt like a clean path to a permanent faculty position.

What helped me a bit was trying to diversify early: internship in biotech, contributing to industry grant reports, and picking up data analysis skills outside the bench. I started tracking outreach attempts and outcomes, and although the numbers are messy, I did land one informational interview that led to a possible collaboration.

Is the real issue the path itself, or is there a mismatch between what people want and what academia rewards?

I once spent a summer chasing a grant idea that turned into a sideshow; I learned more about why people leave labs than about the grant itself. Maybe the real skill is finding allies outside the PI's orbit and learning to tell a story that resonates with funders or industry partners.
