What can help with a dry cough from my ACE inhibitor?
#1
I’ve been on the same blood pressure medication for years, but lately I’ve been getting a really dry, hacking cough that just won’t go away. My doctor mentioned it could be a side effect of the ACE inhibitor I’m taking, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what they discussed with their doctor.

I had that exact dry cough when I was on an ACE inhibitor years ago. My doctor explained it’s a common side effect for some people because of bradykinin buildup. I switched to an ARB and the cough cleared in about two weeks.

I tried hanging in there thinking it would fade, but the cough got louder at night. We eventually changed meds, and the cough faded within a few days after the switch. My doctor watched my blood pressure closely after the change.

I asked if there was any way to keep the med and quiet the cough, like lowering the dose or adding something for the throat. Doc said usually the best fix is switch to a different class if it’s bothersome, and that helped me.

I started worrying it was allergies or a throat infection, not a medication side effect. In the visit, the clinician explained that the cough can show up with this class for some people. Did your doctor discuss whether this could be the med and what they plan to do?

I kept notes on when the cough was worst and tried taking the pill at bedtime to see if it helped. It didn’t, so we switched and I felt a lot better after the first week. Still, the memory of months of coughing sticks.

I remember the relief when the new script landed and the cough finally eased. It felt abrupt but also like the right move even though it was a hassle to adjust dosing, pharmacy visits, and blood pressure checks.
