What can i do if tap-on tap-off isn't registering on city buses?

I’ve been trying to figure out the new tap-on, tap-off payment system on our city buses, but my last two trips charged me the maximum daily fare instead of the cheaper single ride. I’m not sure if I’m holding my card wrong at the reader when I exit or if the system just didn’t register my tap-off properly.

I had something like that last month. I boarded, I think I tapped, rode a bit, then when I got off the reader didn’t beep or I didn’t hear it. Later I checked my card history and saw the max daily charge. It felt like the exit tap didn’t register.

Now I try to listen for the exit beep and I peek at the trip history right after the ride. If there’s no second tap or the exit shows as unlogged, I know something went wrong. I also keep a rough note of times I ride and compare to the app. When I found gaps, I contacted support.

Could the issue actually be the daily cap kicking in? If you used more than one ride in a day, the system might max out the fare even if a single ride would have been cheaper?

I’m not sure this matters, but I still feel like I’m chasing ghosts with the reader. A couple trips today charged max even though I only rode short distances. I’m wary of relying on it and may just tally cash options next time.
