What can I do to get motion blur right in street photography?

I work with many women who are looking for relationship tips for women that help them navigate modern relationships while staying true to themselves. There's so much conflicting advice out there about what women "should" do in relationships.

Some relationship tips for women I often discuss: trust your instincts about people and situations, communicate your needs clearly rather than expecting partners to read your mind, and maintain your own life and interests outside the relationship. It's also important to know your boundaries and be willing to enforce them.

What relationship tips for women have you found most helpful? I'm interested in advice that empowers women to have healthy, equal relationships rather than playing games or compromising their values.

I’ve been trying to get better at capturing motion blur in my street photography, but my shots just look messy instead of intentional. I can’t seem to find the right balance between shutter speed and panning to keep some part of the subject sharp while the background streaks nicely.

I spent a whole afternoon chasing motion with a 1/60 shutter and panning a line down the street. The background turned into ribbons, but the subject looked smeared or chopped mid stride. It felt like I was chasing a feeling, not a technique.

I tried following a cyclist with the camera and kept the shutter around 1/125. Some frames looked kinda alive, but most were smeared in odd directions and the street details dissolved.

One time I got a cleaner look by using a longer lens and letting the subject stay crisp while the background blurred a bit, but it only worked when the subject moved in a relatively predictable arc.

Maybe the problem isn’t the shutter at all but the background clutter and the decision to shoot wide open in mid afternoon.

Do you think the problem is not the gear but how you’re tracking people—are you waiting for a perfect moment or trying to keep a line through the frame?

I dropped the chase for perfection and started letting a few things blur out in the frame while a sharp runner crossed; some days it just felt random, other days like a small win that didn’t last.
