What can I do to keep dominant members from scaring off newbies in my forum?

I’ve been running a small hobby forum for a few months, and I’m starting to notice a few members who dominate every single thread, often with very long posts. While I appreciate their enthusiasm, I worry it might be making newer or quieter members feel like there’s no point in jumping in. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of dynamic, and how did you handle it without discouraging your most active users?

Yeah I know that vibe. It can feel like the same few folks own the conversation, and newcomers might stay quiet just to avoid the pressure. I’ve watched threads where a long wall of text just keeps rolling and new voices get drowned out.

In one forum cycle I tried something concrete: I started calling out the first two new voices in a thread and asked the long posters to summarize their point in a sentence or two when possible. I tracked replies and noticed the share of unique posters in those threads rose from about 20% to around 30% over six weeks. It wasn’t a slam dunk, but we got some fresh comments.

Sometimes I wonder if the real problem isn’t the dominant posts but how the chat dynamics feel to people who just joined. I’m not sure it’s the right problem, but do you think the format or timing feeds the perception that you have to respond in kind to be heard?

I’ve also tried stepping back and letting quieter threads breathe. If I jump in too soon with a long reply, I feel like I pull the focus away again. A few times I added a short late comment just to nudge others to weigh in, and then left it alone for a day or two.
