What can i do to keep gratitude journaling meaningful?

I think I’ve finally hit my limit with trying to keep a daily gratitude journal. For months, I’ve been forcing myself to write three things every single night, but lately it just feels like a hollow chore, listing the same small things over and over. I’m starting to wonder if this practice is actually making me more mindful or if it’s just another box to check before bed.

I dropped the three-item rule and kept one line about one moment that stood out. It felt like a small anchor for gratitude instead of a duty.

I kept the habit but tied it to a tiny ritual: sip tea, stand up, then jot a single sentence. That cue makes it feel like part of the evening, not a chore.

A week in I noticed I kept circling the same tiny things, so I tried a 'what it taught me' prompt instead of gratitude. Still tired, but at least it sparked a small reflection.

Is this really the core problem, or am I just tired of the ritual?
