What can i do when my 3-year-old won't sit in the car seat?

I’m really struggling with my 3-year-old’s sudden refusal to get into his car seat. Every single trip, even the short ones to preschool, have turned into a major battle of wills where he goes completely stiff or tries to climb out. I’ve tried talking calmly, giving choices, and leaving extra time, but nothing works and we both end up upset. I’m just not sure what else to try when we absolutely have to get somewhere.

I get the melt downs. My kid did something like that for a while. We tried practicing buckling at home with a pretend car, a sticker for each step, and a small reward when the belt clicked. It helped a little on some days, but on real trips it was still a full stop and tears.

Could this be more than just the buckle? Maybe he's anxious about the car, the noise, or separation. Not sure, but I started watching what happened before the meltdown and whether something else was off.

We did driveway practice with the engine off, two minutes max, timer out, and a tiny toy as a reward. It didn't fix everything, but it slowed the pace a bit and kept the mood from exploding every time.

Feels like a test of control more than safety. We tried a quick pre in-out ritual before climbing in—one small choice, one tiny responsibility, then we move on. It still isn’t reliable, but at least it isn’t pure chaos every ride.
