What can we do to improve deforestation monitoring in the Amazon?
#1
I just saw the news about the new satellite imagery showing the extent of the deforestation in the Amazon this quarter. It’s one thing to hear the numbers, but seeing those huge, stark patches where there was just dense green a few months ago really hit me differently. I’m left wondering if the current mechanisms for monitoring and reporting are actually making a difference, or if we’re just getting better at documenting a loss we can’t seem to stop.

Those satellite images hit different than the numbers in a report. I can’t shake the image of those gaps in green and I wonder if the monitoring systems are actually changing anything on the ground.

A couple of friends and I joined a local watch group last year we flagged a few clear cut sites and we did see a few alerts get a quick follow up but the same patches popped up again in a few months.

I keep thinking maybe the real driver isn't the data gaps but the demand driving the damage. You fix the maps but the pressure stays.

Is it possible the problem isn't the data delay but political will budgets and who gets to decide what counts as a threat?

I tried measuring my own area with a drone once the battery died and I got one half usable flight but it added to the feeling that the data is noisy.

Sometimes I think the numbers are easier to stomach than the images Then I scroll and the gaps feel endless.
